- Perennial
- Altai Chives originates from China and Japan and has an onion-garlic flavour.
- It produces chive-like leaves and small fleshy bulbs, known as ‘fire onions’.
- Altai Chives will grow to about 25 cm tall at maturity extending to 40cm with the flowers, and a spread of 45cm.
- The grassy leaves remain forest green in colour throughout the season.
- They bear dense umbels of pink-purple flowers with soft shades of lavender and pink.
- Although Altai Chives closely resembles classic chives, they are even hardier.
- They are most effective when planted in groupings and ideal for window boxes and patio containers.
- It is an essential and decorative herb, easy to grow in rockeries or well-drained flower beds.
- They can withstand both cold and dry summers.
- Altai Chives need full sun to partly shade.
- It will usually die back to the ground each winter and will regrow again in spring.
