Description

  • Perennial
  • The loquat is native to southeastern China and has been cultivated since ancient times in China and Japan.
  • It is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow to 5-10m tall, with a rounded crown, short trunk and woolly new twigs.
  • The loquat bears fragrant clusters of white flowers from autumn to winter, followed by edible yellow to orange/red fruits up to 4cm long.

Culinary Uses

  • The fruits are delicious to eat raw – they have a slightly acid, refreshing flavor.
  • Loquats may be eaten for desert, either fresh or as an ingredient of a fruit salad or cooked as compote.
  • They are also processed into conserves (preserved in syrup), jams, jellies candies and liqueur.

Parts Used

  • The tender leaves are harvested as required and can be used fresh or dried.
  • The hairs should be removed from the leaves to prevent irritation of the throat.

Medicinal Uses. It is said that

  • Loquat fruit is low in saturated fat and sodium and rich in minerals (calcium, iron, selenium), fatty acids, malic acid as well as vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene.
  • The leaves are one of the most popular cough remedies in the Far East and it is an ingredient of many patent medicines.
  • Loquat leaf has been scientifically shown to have a large amount of incredible health benefits.
  • It aids Mucous Membranes - will assist the body by acting as a mucolytic agent, which helps dissolve thick mucus that holds toxic compounds.
  • The leaf combats Diabetes – it produces a variety of chemicals that have been shown to increase insulin production which may help to reduce diabetes.
  • Therefor, the leaf has been approved by the Chinese government as an anti-diabetic agent because it produces a set of natural bodily chemicals, which increase insulin production.
